I think that you'd better book a tour with an operator because it's safer. For example, (I'm not sure if it's reliable or not) Desert Adventures run daily expeditions to Salar de Atacama, Valle de la Luna and Geyser Del Tatio in special cars and with oxygen equipment. They speak English, German and French. Their office is on Caracoles.
